Spitfires at Duxford?
Question
Answer
Yes, Duxford has multiple Spitfire aircraft and a special connection to this iconic aircraft. In August 1938, RAF Duxford's No.19 Squadron became the first RAF squadron to re-equip with the new Supermarine Spitfire, making Duxford the birthplace of operational Spitfire flying. As the very first RAF airfield to receive the Spitfire, Duxford now has the largest number of airworthy Spitfires on one site in the world.
The museum displays various Spitfire variants including Spitfire N3200 (IWM's only airworthy aircraft and a veteran of the Dunkirk Campaign), Spitfire Mk Ia AR213, and Spitfire PL983 which was designed for aerial photo reconnaissance. Visitors can see Spitfires take to the skies from the airfield where they first flew, and witness these historic aircraft in flight during regular air shows and flying events.
You can also book flights through companies like Classic Wings and Aerial Collective for an unforgettable warbird experience.
