About This Aircraft

The Sikorsky MH-53M Pave Low IV was a heavily modified, long-range special operations helicopter of the United States Air Force. This example is 68-8284. Developed from the HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giant" transport helicopter, the Pave Low series was designed for covert, low-level, long-range insertion and extraction of special forces, day or night, in any weather. It was equipped with a vast array of advanced avionics, including terrain-following and terrain-avoidance radar, a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor, and a comprehensive defensive suite. Powered by two General Electric T64 turboshaft engines, this imposing helicopter was a key asset for USAF Special Operations Command from the Vietnam War through to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
