About This Aircraft
The Panavia Tornado was a family of twin-engine, variable-sweep wing combat aircraft, developed and manufactured jointly by the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy. This aircraft, XX946, is the second prototype (P.02) of the Tornado. First flown in October 1974, it was the first prototype to be assembled in the UK at Warton. As a development aircraft, XX946 played a vital role in testing the Tornado's systems, including its revolutionary variable-geometry "swing-wings" and advanced terrain-following radar. The successful test programme involving XX946 and other prototypes led to the production of the Tornado GR1 strike aircraft, which would become the RAF's premier strike platform for decades, serving with distinction in the Gulf War and other conflicts.
