About This Aircraft

The Messerschmitt Me 410 "Hornisse" (Hornet) was a German heavy fighter and fast bomber of World War II. This aircraft, Werknummer 420430, is an A-1/U2 variant. The Me 410 was a development of the troubled Me 210, with a lengthened fuselage and more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603A engines, which greatly improved its handling. As a "Zerstörer" (destroyer), its role was to attack Allied bomber formations. The A-1/U2 variant was heavily armed, with two 20mm cannons and two 7.92mm machine guns in the nose, two more 20mm cannons in a ventral weapons bay, and two remotely-controlled 13mm machine guns in rear-facing barbettes. This example is the only surviving Me 410 in the world.
