About This Aircraft
The Junkers Ju 88 was one of Germany's most versatile combat aircraft of the Second World War. This specific aircraft, Werknummer 360043, is a Ju 88 R-1 night fighter variant with a remarkable history. On 9th May 1943, its crew, who were defecting, flew the aircraft to Scotland and surrendered. This provided Allied intelligence with an invaluable prize: an intact, operational example of the FuG 202 Lichtenstein BC airborne interception radar, a piece of technology the British were desperate to examine. The R-1 variant was powered by twin BMW 801 radial engines, which gave it better performance at lower altitudes suitable for night interception. This historically significant aircraft is now preserved at the RAF Museum.
