About This Aircraft

The Hunting H.126, XN714, was a unique British experimental aircraft designed to research "jet flap" or "blown flap" technology. The concept involved diverting a large portion of the jet engine's thrust over the wing's flaps to dramatically increase lift at low speeds, enabling very short take-off and landing (STOL) performance. The H.126 was powered by a Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet, with extensive ducting to blow hot gas over the full-span flaps and ailerons. The single prototype, XN714, first flew in March 1963 and demonstrated remarkable slow-flight capabilities, operating at speeds below 30 knots. Although the technology was not put into production, the H.126 provided invaluable research data for STOL aircraft development.
