Hawker Hunter FR.10

Fighter-Reconnaissance Aircraft By: Hawker Aircraft Origin: United Kingdom First Flight: 1951

About This Aircraft

This Hawker Hunter, XF426, is an FR.10 (Fighter-Reconnaissance, Mk.10) variant. Based on the F.6 fighter, the FR.10 was adapted for low-level tactical reconnaissance duties. The key modification was the installation of three camera ports in a redesigned nose section, allowing it to take photographs of enemy positions. It retained the Hunter's formidable armament of four 30mm ADEN cannons, making it capable of defending itself and attacking targets of opportunity. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet, the FR.10 combined the Hunter's high performance and excellent handling with a vital reconnaissance capability. XF426 served with distinction in the RAF, primarily with No. 2 and No. 4 Squadrons based in Germany during the Cold War.
