Hawker Siddeley Andover E.3A

Medium transport aircraft By: Hawker Siddeley Origin: United Kingdom First Flight: 1965

About This Aircraft

The Hawker Siddeley Andover was a British twin-turboprop military transport aircraft. This example, XS639, is an E.3A variant, which served in the electronic reconnaissance and calibration role. Derived from the civilian HS 748 airliner, the Andover was notable for its "kneeling" undercarriage, which allowed the rear of the aircraft to be lowered for easy loading via a rear ramp. The E.3A variant was fitted with sophisticated electronic equipment for communications and navigation aid calibration duties, ensuring the accuracy of airport systems across the UK and beyond. XS639 was operated by No. 115 Squadron RAF and represents an important, if unsung, chapter in the RAF's electronic warfare and support capabilities during the Cold War.
