About This Aircraft
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 was a first-generation vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) "jump jet" that served with the Royal Air Force. XZ997 is a fine example of this iconic British design. The Harrier's revolutionary capability came from its single Rolls-Royce Pegasus vectored-thrust turbofan engine, with four rotating nozzles directing thrust downwards for vertical flight or rearwards for conventional flight. The GR.3 variant featured an extended, laser-ranging nose and a radar warning receiver in the tail, enhancing its ground-attack capabilities. Harriers like XZ997 were famously deployed during the 1982 Falklands War, where their unique abilities proved invaluable. The Harrier revolutionised military aviation doctrine, allowing operations from forward bases without the need for long runways.
