About This Aircraft
The Handley Page Hastings was a British post-war military transport aircraft that served the Royal Air Force for three decades. This example, TG511, is a T.5 variant, which was specifically modified for training V-bomber crews. The Hastings was a large, four-engine tail-dragger, powered by four Bristol Hercules sleeve-valve radial engines. The T.5 variant was fitted with a distinctive ventral pannier to house a bombing radar and was equipped with specialised navigation and bombing systems inside for training navigators and bomb aimers for the Valiant, Victor, and Vulcan fleet. Hastings also served with distinction as a standard transport aircraft, notably during the Berlin Airlift. TG511 represents the final chapter of the Hastings' long service, preparing crews for the jet age.
