Gloster Javelin FAW.1

About This Aircraft

The Gloster Javelin was a British all-weather interceptor aircraft that served with the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. XA564 is an early FAW.1 (Fighter, All-Weather, Mk.1) variant. The Javelin was the world's first twin-engined, delta-winged fighter to enter service. Its large size was dictated by the need to carry powerful radar equipment and a two-man crew (pilot and radar operator). Powered by a pair of Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojet engines, the Javelin could approach speeds of 700 mph. The FAW.1 was armed with four 30mm Aden cannons. The Javelin formed a key part of the UK's air defences throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, tasked with intercepting Soviet bombers.
