Gloster Meteor F9/40 (prototype)

Fighter aircraft By: Gloster Aircraft Company Origin: United Kingdom First Flight: 1943

About This Aircraft

The Gloster Meteor F9/40 prototype, DG202/G, is one of the most important aircraft in British aviation history. It was one of the first prototypes of what would become the United Kingdom's first operational jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor. This specific airframe, DG202/G, was actually the fifth prototype built but was the first to fly, taking to the skies on 5th March 1943. It was powered by two de Havilland Halford H.1 turbojets (later known as the Goblin). The successful flight testing of DG202/G and other prototypes paved the way for the production Meteor F.Mk.1, which entered squadron service with 616 Squadron in July 1944 and saw action against German V-1 flying bombs. This aircraft stands as a testament to British innovation, marking the transition from the piston era to the jet age.
