Dornier Do 17 Z-2

Medium bomber By: Dornier Origin: Germany First Flight: 1934

About This Aircraft

The Dornier Do 17, nicknamed the "Flying Pencil" for its slim fuselage, was a German medium bomber used extensively by the Luftwaffe in the early years of the Second World War. This aircraft is the Do 17 Z-2, Werknummer 1160, which was shot down over the Goodwin Sands, Kent, on 26 August 1940 during the Battle of Britain. The Z-2 variant featured more powerful Bramo 323P Fafnir radial engines and increased defensive armament. After spending 73 years on the seabed, it was salvaged in 2013 and is now undergoing extensive conservation. It is the world's only known surviving example of a Dornier Do 17, making it a unique and historically priceless artefact of the Battle of Britain.
