de Havilland Venom FB.4

Fighter-bomber By: de Havilland Origin: United Kingdom First Flight: 1949

About This Aircraft

The de Havilland Venom FB.4 was a British single-seat fighter-bomber developed from the earlier Vampire. This example, J-1704, served with the Swiss Air Force, which was a major operator of the type. The Venom represented an important evolutionary step, featuring a more powerful de Havilland Ghost turbojet engine and a new, thinner wing with a modest sweep angle. This improved its performance significantly. Armed with four 20mm Hispano Mk.V cannons in the nose and capable of carrying bombs and rockets under its wings, the FB.4 was a capable tactical aircraft. It bridged the gap between the first generation of straight-wing jets and the supersonic fighters that would follow.
