Douglas Dakota C.4

Military transport aircraft By: Douglas Origin: United States First Flight: 1935

About This Aircraft

The Douglas Dakota is the Royal Air Force designation for the American Douglas C-47 Skytrain, itself a military variant of the iconic DC-3 airliner. KN645 is a C.4 variant, which formed the backbone of Allied tactical transport operations during and after World War II. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines, the Dakota was renowned for its ruggedness and reliability. The aircraft could transport up to 28 troops, cargo, or be configured for paratroop drops and casualty evacuation. Dakotas like KN645 were vital in every theatre of war, from the D-Day landings in Normandy to the campaign in Burma, solidifying their status as one of the most important aircraft in history.
