Consolidated PBY-6A Catalina

Maritime patrol aircraft By: Consolidated Origin: United States First Flight: 1935

About This Aircraft

The Consolidated PBY-6A Catalina is one of the most iconic flying boats of the Second World War era. This magnificent amphibious aircraft, capable of operating from both water and land, combines robust maritime capabilities with remarkable endurance. With its distinctive high parasol wing and twin Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines, the Catalina has a recognisable silhouette. The PBY-6A variant, which entered service late in the war, featured improvements including a taller tail fin and improved radar. With an impressive range exceeding 2,500 miles, the Catalina was invaluable for maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue operations. It served with numerous Allied air forces, including a distinguished record with RAF Coastal Command. This example is painted as L-866 of the Royal Danish Air Force.
