Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2/Trop (“Black 6”)

Fighter aircraft By: Messerschmitt Origin: Germany First Flight: 1935

About This Aircraft

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was Germany's premier fighter aircraft of the Second World War. This aircraft is a Bf 109G-2/Trop, Werknummer 10639, famously known as "Black 6". The 'Gustav' or G-variant was the most produced version of the 109. The "/Trop" designation indicates it was specially equipped for operations in the desert of North Africa, featuring a dust filter on the engine's air intake. "Black 6" was captured by Allied forces in 1942. After decades of painstaking restoration in the UK, it was returned to flying condition and flew on the airshow circuit between 1991 and 1997. Powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 605A inverted V-12 engine, it is one of the very few surviving, authentic Bf 109s that saw combat in WWII.
